What is Rosacea?
Written by ma on January 19, 2012 – 4:54 pmRosacea is a medical condition which typically begins as redness on the central face across the cheeks, nose, or forehead, but can also less commonly affect the neck, chest, ears, and scalp. Though this skin condition doesn’t have a cure, treatments can control and reduce rosacea symptoms. Without treatment, some cases of rosacea can cause knobby bumps on the nose and cheeks that can multiply. One of the most important things is to learn what triggers the flare-ups, and then avoid them. Usually rosacea affects adults and, in most people, rosacea is cyclic. Rosacea signs and symptoms may flare up for a period of weeks to months, and then diminish before flaring up again. Usually rosacea appears in three phases:
1. pre-rosacea – in this phase there may be a simple tendency to flush or blush easily. Then it progress to a persistent redness in the central portion of face;
2. vascular rosacea – small blood vessels on your nose and cheeks swell and become visible;
3. inflammatory rosacea – small, red bumps or pustules may appear and persist, spreading across your nose, cheeks, forehead and chin.
Because of this progressive nature of rosacea, an early diagnosis is important. Treatments tend to be more effective when started earlier.
